In a place that's the training ground for some of the world's best mountaineers, you'll learn about leading a team, traveling on a glacier, and wake up each morning to stunning views and new challenges. You'll head to the glaciers and forests of the North Cascades. ![]() On this course, you'll practice leadership and learn to live well with a small group in a demanding environment. Grow as a leader in challenging conditions and learn the fundamentals of mountaineering. Also heavily glaciated, this mountain derives its name from the native Lummi word seqsen, said to mean “high peak.” Shuksan is also heavily glaciated, with options for more technical travel. Mount Shuksan lies immediately east of Baker. Mount Rainier, by comparison, has just thirty-five square miles of ice. It is perpetually snow-capped and has forty-four square miles of ice spread among twelve glaciers, making it one of the most extensive snow and ice mountaineering training grounds in the North Cascades. portion of the Cascade Range, lying just 15 miles south of the Canadian border. Mount Baker is the northernmost volcano in the U.S. The iconic peaks of Mount Baker (10,778 feet) and Mount Shuksan (9,131 feet) serve as the site of this course.
